Imports vs Exports
City Deep District, Johannesburg
A dry port is an inland logistics and handling facility for cargo containers and large bulk goods. City Deep Terminal in Johannesburg is the largest dry port in Africa, receiving and processing half a million cargo containers worth of goods each year. Infrastructural routes, most by rail and truck, flow not only to and from South African seaports, but also from its national neighbors to the north.
The location of City Deep Terminal both next to the dense sprawl of Johannesburg, and to the periphery of the megacity, provides more efficient distribution of goods to different clientele, and an avoidance of transportation congestion, as compared to a more distributed network of smaller container processing facilities.
To meeting growing cargo traffic, a new expansion facility is currently being developed to the northwest of the original site, and will enable double the container processing capacity
