Informal Commerce
Carletonville, Merafong.
Blyvooruitzivicht Residential Area, built for the middle class workers of the mines, is located separated from the Miners’ housing. Eventhough the differences are quite clear between both areas, these are connected by a buffer zone of green area that is used to cross from one town to another. On the side of the miners’ housing, a taxi rank created informal buisnesses that gather around the taxi parking. A restaurant-butchery market plus some urban furnityre next to the road, serve to create an interst point of social exchange. In a suburban town where everything is dispered and far located, the taxi ranks are urban nodes where people can rest, shop and socialize.
