Extended Networks
Carletonville, Merafong Municipality
The mining town of Carletonville is internally connected by two perpendicular roads - the 7th Avenue and R500- that ensure the mobility of the miners and the inhabitants of the residential settlements. A network of minibus taxis has developed and extended this network to uncommunicated areas. Two taxi ranks are usually found per mining area, these are located in the zone designated for miners housing and its main station is located in Oberholzer within Carletonville central. Whilst the majority of mine workers come from foreign countries and live close to the mines either within mining compounds or nearby privately developed settlements, there are a few informal ones who mobilize from the township of Khutsong, on the north west of Carletonville. For these, the long distance from the mines make the travels expensive and unsustainable, especially considering it is the township with the highest density and lowest income of Merafong Municipality.
