Project Global: Ground

This exploration of our current day metropolitan condition as a system of systems deals with the crust of the Earth as a primary carrying capacitor of human activities, from the extraction of resources deep within the ground, to agricultural operations that barely scratch the surface.

Parallel Connections

Wadeville, Germinston

Alrode, Wadeville and Rooikop are industrial Parks well-connected to: other industrial cities like Germinston, to the Rand Airport, and to Johannesburg’s CBD; Via Metro Rail and Freeways. The N3 connects the complexes with Durban, South Africa’s most important industiral port. On the other hand, the workforce commutes from the black townships of Thokoza, Vosloorus Katlehong, located to the south of the industrial parks. Together, they have developed a codependent relationship with the Industrial parks to which they commute using the Mini-bus taxi service. The duration of the trip is approximately 40 minutes to 1h, and is increasing as the townships grow as a response to over densification. Several points of interest have been highlighted, these are areas usually located in transport nexus points such as taxi ranks, bases for the mini-bus taxis, in which informal activity has been taking place, such as food trucks and fruits stands. Considering the public access nature of the industrial park, many of these points of interest have been surfacing in between the properties, usually adjacent to bus stops or under tree canopies.
