Carletonville, Merafong Municipality
Waterval City is a privately-managed city that operates outside the administrative reach of public authority. Many private initiatives have been done to give maintenance to the river and the surrounding areas. The Jukskei River crosses north through Waterval. The river is a great asset for walking and biking trails, parks and rest areas, and was a key feature for the selection of the site, however before reaching Waterval, the river flows through many industrial areas and informal settlements like Alexandra, and thus arrives heavily polluted. Since 2017 a concrete and steel litter trap has been built to collect around 90% of the rubbish. Moreover, the complex was constructed using the neighboring resources, such as the Jukskei quarry amongst others, thus heavily impacting its surrounding due to the scale of the construction.
