Pressure Points
Alexandra
The infrastructure is challenged from the density and the additional elements on the informal settlements of the backyarding phenomena. Looking in the sections of the two study areas of Alexandra it is visible that there is a difference in the electricity, sewage and water connections.
The organic development of Alexandra compared to one of its extensions, visualises the way the main and temporary dwellings are connected to the supplies system. In the first case, the number of the additional antennas and satellite plates are increasing according to the extra constructions. This creates extra pressure as extra connections to the main poles are made from the tenants. In the other case, it is more organised as the design of the areas considered the facilities as one of the main problems that needed to be resolved in order to minimise future complications. However the question of maintenance and improvement of the structure in both the dwellings and the facilities rises.
