This exploration of our current day metropolitan condition as a system of systems deals with the crust of the Earth as a primary carrying capacitor of human activities, from the extraction of resources deep within the ground, to agricultural operations that barely scratch the surface.

Ground Insertion

The project reactivates the underground in two ways: In an geological sense, the ground, made of decomposed live matter is already a living cemetery and therefore this project highlights this relationship by reinserting bodies into this already excavated space. On the other hand, the cemetery conceived as a social, cultural and didactic space looks urbanistically at how to enrich the city of johannesburg by extending on the vertical axis and proposing an alternative to the urban sprawl of the city.
