Abandoned Towns

Carletonville, Johannesburg

In the area of Carletonville there is a high number of abandoned towns which was the result of the mines’ closure or the relocation of the company. Carletonville is an example of this phenomena holding a reserve of infrastructure. The lack of resources and maintenance led to the increase of informal settlements and criminality in the total area. As a sequence the image of the area is becoming less attractive and from the mining center that it used to be it is transforming to a ghost.
