Vending machine occupies every corner in Japan. The number of vending machines is close to 5.5 million. Since most vending machines provide both cold and hot drinks and with 24/7 service, these high-tech machines cost almost 6.6 billion kilowatts in a year. This number is close to the amount of energy that a power plant produces in a year, which is 6.8 billion in one year. It became a big issue after the nuclear disaster of Fukushima.1 2
As a result, vending machine businessmen start to think about how to reduce these machines’ energy costing. They have several approaches. A newly designed vending machine equipped with a heat pump is promoted. The heat pump could make the machine utilize the heat produced while cooling down the cold drinks to warm up the hot drinks so that the machine could effectively reduce energy wasting. In addition, vending machines are equipped with a screen sensor to start up the machine while people want to buy drinks in order to decline the unnecessary use of energy, or using LED light to reach saving energy. Another method is to restrict the light usage of the interior vending machine. These solutions successfully saved 52.5 percent of energy in 2014, compared to the energy cost in 2005.3
The popularity of vending machine not just comes from its convenience, but also low cost, low crime rate in the country, multiple-choice of products, high tempo of living and working, and the completed system are other reasons. It sells, depending on business decisions, different kinds of products and most of them are drinks and tobacco. Besides its business function, vending machines’ serial numbers have a special function in society. Because of vending machines’ wide occupation, these numbers could be used to locate specific positions.
