Satoyama is the territory in between the flat land where people can settle (sato) and the mountain or foothills (yama). In a Satoyama there is a local agricultural community that manages through their everyday activities the surrounding ecosystems, both forests and farmlands. Sustainability is the core of such societies where every activity is carried out to serve all parties: community, wildlife and natural environment.
